The Passionless Bella

My older kids talked me into going to the midnight showing of Eclipse. I may be one of only a handful of people in the universe who isn't a fan of the Twilight saga. Actually, I think the storyline is very interesting and I like the twists that Stephenie Meyer put on the vampire myth.

But, I simply cannot stand Bella. She's so boring. I think my main gripe is that she's so dispassionate. I'm extremely passionate about certain things like my family, the gospel, abortion, education, patriotism/America, moral decay in our society, and Sears. In fact, when anyone mentions a "hot topic" my kids will all say, "Uh, oh, here it comes." I do try to tame my passion sometimes, but not often. I'm the one that always has to share my opinion, especially in our local paper. And, I have a lot of opinions.

Here's one. At the premiere of Eclipse we had to wade through the coming attractions. One of which is a movie about a lesbian couple whose lives fall apart when the sperm donor of their son wants to be part of his life. Eeeww. Not a movie I want to watch at all. The idea of a kid having to grow up with lesbians gives me the heebie jeebies. I'm sorry, but two women, or two men, do not belong in that kind of relationship. And, what was the marketing department thinking when it decided to show a preview of this film to a theater filled with women who are hot and heavy over Edward and Jacob--not really the target market for a movie about lesbians.

Anyway, back to Bella. I think that's why I find it hard to buy that two men, whatever they are, would be so madly in love with her that they'd fight over her. Why? They could fight over a cardboard cut-out with more personality and more passion than Bella. She's so bland. So boring.

Now, give me Katniss from The Hunger Games.  There's a passionate character. There's a girl I can root for and get behind. That's a character I love. I can see two men fighting over her because she is awesome.

Bella just ain't that awesome. Sorry.

Don't apologize! :) Bella is the most passive MC of any novel I've come across. Sadly, save for the advice of one AWESOME editor, my MC may have followed her footsteps.

Never again! And you're right. Why would two men--of any species--fight over someone who offers so little?

I agree completely. You put it so well, but it must be late. I got quite a laugh over the idea of Edward and Jacob fighting over a cardboard cutout.

Don't worry. I can't stand Bella either. Now, Jacob, on the other hand...

Katniss is the best!

I agree, too. I love Katniss and I believe Bella is a bore. An interesting point is that Meyers studied the Pride and Prejudice plot--as I've read, so here's the inconsistency I see in Edward. If Bella's scent is a drug that makes him desire her, then I would think the first time he smells her he would ENJOY the scent, but keeping in line with the Pride and Prejudice plot, he has to detest her--just as when Darcy tells Bingley that it would be a punishment for him to stand up with Elizabeth--and I believe Edward does detest Bella, at first. In Jacob's case, I can only think that Bella is the "older woman", and she is supposed to be a beauty--at least in the eyes of all males in Forks! And, if Jacob is supposed to be a replica of Wickham, then he wasn't especially picky, was he?

Thank you. I haven't heard anything but excitement about the movies coming out. Nothing about how good they are after they are out... but, even with the excitement, I have still never desired to watch or read the series. (maybe it was the RS lesson one Sunday about a year ago about the stupid series)I did hear wonderful things about the Hunger games, maybe I will pick them up. Well, maybe after i;m done with Schindler's list.

Hey Sister Talley~ I am glad your kiddos made you go. My dad teased me and Toms wife when we went to watch it and said we look like pregnant jr. high girls going to the movie :) haha. I agree the actress who plays Bella makes her character seem bland. You should'nt judge the books by the movies though. So if you haven't read the books, do that then watch the movies, maybe it make it a better experience. TO each their own though...I personally am a twihard fan and proud of it :)
